Some people believe that they have excellent credit and they know their own credit activities. Unfortunately, there may be open accounts resulting from a typo but some credit card companies will deny accountability in their own mistakes and the only way to find out is to do a credit report check.
Credit Card Companies Responsibilities
According to different credit card companies, it is the consumer's responsibility to keep track of their own credit card accounts. If a credit card was opened under a person's name either by accident or on purpose, it is somehow that person's responsibility to call the company about any discrepancies. For example, if a family member opens a credit card and decides to add another member as an authorized user but the credit card company mistypes the information, it is up to the "authorized user" to figure out that something is amiss even if they don't receive any information that tells them otherwise.
The customer service departments of these companies state that the card owner(s) needs to call credit card companies to see if an account has been opened. Needless to say, there are hundreds of credit card companies and calling each one to find out discrepancies is irrational.
